About the Event
Session Description
Historically, African American men in the U.S. have endured centuries of trauma in various forms including racism, dehumanization, lynchings, beatings, and criminalization. Long considered a threat to white women and the social order, African American men who entered into intimate relationships with white women placed themselves, and potentially their communities, in potential peril. Since the U.S. Supreme Court passed the Loving v. Virginia in 1967, the increase of interracial relationships has increased dramatically throughout the United States. Over time, the incidence of African American men entering interracial relationships has steadily increased despite continued challenging systemic factors. As such, African American men in interracial relationships bring unique challenges into the therapy room. This workshop will explore the historical impact on African American men and how these factors appear in the therapy room.
