MEMBER AWARDS

WAMFT honored the following members for their outstanding service and accomplishments at our Awards Banquet on March 7, 2008, in Seattle:

Bob Vincent, MA – Volunteer of the Year

In appreciation of your outstanding contributions to the field of marriage and family therapy and to your professional community

Bob has been an AAMFT Clinical Member for nearly 25 years and an AAMFT Approved Supervisor for almost 20 years.  He is currently in private practice in Puyallup.  Bob served as Region 3 Representative for WAMFT beginning in 2002.  His colleagues describe Bob as the “unsung hero of our association,” primarily due to his modest diligence and an approach that doesn’t beg for attention.  Bob works with regularity and steadfastness.  He consistently created opportunities in his region by providing ongoing educational and networking events in his region for eight years.

Amanda Montgomery – Student of the Year

In appreciation of your outstanding contributions to the learning community

Amanda is a second-year student at Pacific Lutheran University.  She is currently an intern at Good Samaritan in Puyallup and will graduate in August 2008.  Amanda demonstrates a real commitment and passion for the field, particularly in addressing issues of social justice and race.  She has provided leadership in serving the needs of military families and has taken leadership positions in two groups that were formed to improve the cultural competence of our students.  She is a courageous promoter of discussions on multicultural issues, and is collaborating with the Diversity Center at PLU to bring the facilitators and concepts of “Unlearning Racism” to the program.

Bill Forisha, PhD – Educator of the Year

In appreciation of your teaching excellence and your outstanding commitment to students

For 20 years, Bill served on the faculty of Bowling Green State University in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies and founded the first family therapy training program in Ohio.  He retired from that institution as an Associate Professor Emeritus.  From September of 1993 through last December, he served on the core faculty of Antioch University, serving as chair of the family therapy program and as director of the Master programs in Psychology.  Bill was instrumental in assuring Antioch’s COAMFTE candidacy status.  Since January 2008, he has chaired the Doctoral program in family therapy at Argosy University in the twin cities in Minnesota.

Claudia Grauf-Grounds PhD – Supervisor of the Year

In appreciation of your clinical and ethical excellence, while fostering strong relationships with supervisees

Claudia received her Bachelor’s in Psychology from Stanford University, her Master’s in Theology and MFT from Fuller Seminary, and her Ph.D. in Sociology with a graduate certificate in MFT from the University of Southern California.  She is currently Chair of the Department of Marriage and Family Therapy at Seattle Pacific University and is in private practice in Seattle.  Claudia has been providing MFT supervision since 1990, and in 2001, she developed and marketed with a colleague the 30-hour AAMFT Supervisor Course, which she has been offering on a consistent basis since its inception.  Students and colleagues in this region often seek her out for mentoring and supervision; however, her mentoring influence has transcended the bounds of the Western Hemisphere, as she has recently provided clinical supervision to the emerging, first-generation MFTs in China.  Claudia has co-authored several publications, most notably one of the primary family therapy texts entitled [i]Essential Skills in Family Therapy[ei].

Cheryl Storm, PhD – Editor’s Choice Award

Cheryl retired in May 2007 from a distinguished 22-year career as a professor of Marriage and Family Therapy at Pacific Lutheran University.  She authored the premier textbooks on clinical supervision in addition to nearly 75 other articles and book chapters.  A clinical member of AAMFT since 1982, past president of WAMFT (1990-91), and an Approved Supervisor for 25 years, Cheryl has had a profound influence on the field, as well as on the lives of countless students and colleagues.  She recently completed two terms as the editor of the Journal of Systemic Therapies and served for 10 years on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Marital and Family Therapy.  The Editor’s Choice Award acknowledges not only the wide range of professional articles she has written and journals she has edited, but also her commitment this past year to encouraging student members to write for the WAMFT newsletter.

Penny Carol Hillaire, MSW – Family Advocacy Award

In appreciation of your dedication and service to families in the state of Washington

Penny Carol is the Director of Family Services for the Lummi Nation in Northwest Washington outside of Bellingham.  She obtained a degree from Western Washington University in Recreation and her Master’s degree in Social Work.  Penny Carol has collaborated with tribal leaders and governmental agencies throughout Washington State and Washington, D.C., in efforts to promote wellness and family support programs for Native Americans.  In her role as director, Penny supervises and manages many programs, such as counseling for Lummi youth in the tribal schools (preschool through 12th grade;); marriage, family, and couples counseling services; drug and alcohol outpatient care and counseling; and CPS and foster family services.

Bill Collins, PhD – Distinguished Clinical Member

In appreciation of your outstanding contributions to the field of marriage and family therapy and to your professional community

Bill received his MS and Ph.D. from the University of Notre Dame in Physics.  He later obtained his MS in Marriage and Family Therapy from Seattle Pacific University.  He is currently Vice President for Operations and Training at the Samaritan Center of Puget Sound, where he has worked since 1980.  Bill was Director of the PCS MFT training program since 1986, teaching and supervising generations of MFTs.  Currently, he is an adjunct faculty member at Seattle Pacific University and Seattle University, and has been conducting site visits for COAMFTE since 1996.  Bill has been an AAMFT Approved Supervisor since 1987 and he established a seminar for the MFT licensure exam.

Bill’s dedication to WAMFT has been longstanding.  He served as Treasurer from 1993-1999, served on the Nominations/Elections Committee from 1987-1992, and is currently serving on the Ethics, Training and Standards Committee since 1998.  Bill has also authored articles in the WAMFT newsletter.

Bill’s colleagues speak of his devotion “to God, his family, and the persons he serves.”  His colleagues characterize Bill as “the quietly distinguished father figure, full of wisdom,” and “a walking encyclopedia.”  His peers identify Bill “as having a great sense of humor and able to explain complex issues in terms that anyone can understand,” and his willingness “to take a stand for ... faculty and students” when necessary.  They clearly see that in communication with others, Bill has an honest, transparent love.  Bill is a man of service, admiring Henri Nouwen’s vision of the Leader who is a Servant.  Bill has adopted this value of service as a central one in his professional life, and says of himself  “...it is a part of my nature to want to give back.”
